Back to Cartoons
On August 16 I did the periodic whinathon about my failure to be a cartoonist. Then I set out to do an animated movie. Call me crazy. But apparently it's something that must be done.
Gel
pens are a fine antidote against too much computer work. But today I realized
that I needed to regress myself back to pencil — not my usual Bic
mechanicals, but the kind you have to sharpen.
(I dug out an old bunch of yellow pencils — did you know their damn erasers get all hard if they aren't used?)
Drawing is a sensual activity, quiet and intimate, you and the line. So I moved myself to the ground floor study with sharpened pencils and a thick pad of toothy paper and a cup of Peanut Butter M&Ms (So? What's more sensuous than Peanut Butter M&Ms???).
And I actually did character study drawings.
I'm definitely in the So-You-Want-To-Be-An-Artist school of illustration. Betty and Veronica — I can say this now — always inspired me. I need eyeballs, eyebrows, and lips. I prefer pretty to grotesque.
