Quito, Ecuador

Monday 12/7/98, Quito

We have a corner room with windows overlooking the city and viewing the mountains, which are very close. At sunset the sun backlights the fog pouring down the mountainside, like foam on an icy cold glass of beer.

The volcano snuggled up to the west of us is on "yellow alert" so we’re keeping an eye open for fireworks.

We’re following strict discipline: breakfast before 11 and no drinking before noon.

Our day’s activity involved strolling down Juan de la Mera Avenue, browsing the myriad art and artifacts stores, which range from t-shirt joints to very classy boutiques. Dinner at La Choza, a huge place specializing in platos tipicos.
