We were so worried about having a long, tiring drive across this big island that we got off to a super-early start on the fast highways instead of the quaint byways. Much to our surprise we arrived at our destination by noon, with three hours to figure out what to do before our room was ready.
So we went down to the boardwalk along the harbor and had a sumptuous picnic lunch from last night’s leftovers: lobster/crab “pizza” and a lobster on rye (repurposed from an overly bread-y lobster roll), plus grapes and cookies. The weather was sleepy breezy warm and I could have stretched out on the bench for a nap… but instead we went to a couple of shops and to an interpretive center that explained about the big lake Bras d’Or, which sits in the middle of Cape Breton. Finally… ice cream cones.
We’re staying at a big resort… very la-di-da but lacks some of the amenities of a roadside motel (like a microwave & refrigerator… middle-brow, I know). I wish the massages weren’t $60. At least it has free internet…
