Result Great special effect photo in black and white, with a color background if desired. Use several Threshold Adjustment layers, masked to get the desired black/white point on each portion of the photograph. See cropped version of final product below.
Method 1. Copy the Original (Fig 1) to a new layer and make any required adjustment. Click on Add Layer Mask button on Layers Palette. With the layer mask selected, use a brush and black paint to knock out the background. Adding a color solid layer behind your masking work will assist in seeing the edges better (and can provide an interesting background on its own). The result is in Figure 2.
3. Click on the mask portion of the Threshold Adjustment Layer. With black, mask out everything but the image portion you like. (You can use the lasso tool to roughly select the area you like, invert your selection, then fill with black. Refine your mask with a paintbrush and black paint to exclude, white paint to include.) 4. Continue adding Threshold Adjustment Layers until all areas of your photo have been converted to black and white. For "Mom" (second figure from the left), two adjustment layers were required to get the faint outlines of her nose and chin. Compare Fig 6 and Fig 7 — note that the mask in Threshold Layer 4 "mom" was blanked out with black paint in order to allow Threshold Layer 5 "mom nose" to show. 5. Finishing touches. Add an empty layer on the top. Use black and white paint to simplify the photo further.
