TEXT

Dono landed in a cloud of stardust. She’d been traveling in the Akan planetary system because the local god there had figured how to engineer sin out of her worshippers without getting rid of free will. The trip had been good for her color—so good, in fact, Dono wondered if she herself had achieved godliness. Suddenly a poof of stardust went up her nose. She sneezed. Without thinking, she wiped her nose on the hem of her beautiful shawl. Shit. Not a god yet. The drone of a distant airplane made her look up at its blinking red lights. And oh, so many stars in the sky! She needed to find her best friend Dash, that’s what, and share with her the secrets of the universe. Wouldn’t they just laugh and laugh and laugh!

COMMENT

The character of Dono here is hand-drawn, scanned, painted in Photoshop, and further elaborated (star brush, text) in Illustrator. The experiment here was to establish the Dono character with a short-short story (aka "flash fiction"), instead of the usual strip narrative.

This character was invented by Pat D. I'm just getting around to incorporating her into my cast of characters. Can't say she will always be so colorful, but I think she's going to be fun. [PHOTO: Pat D. and Susan]
