Day 20: Carlsbad, NM
27 Oct 2008 -- The big event of the day was a visit to Carlsbad Caverns. It brought back memories of family trips to Meramec Caverns and Onondaga Cave in Missouri. A few changes though from those tacky 1950's excursions, where the caves were lit with colored lights and Kate Smith sang “God Bless America” at the end of our guided tours. Carlsbad has a lot of tours where you have to bring your own flashlight and shimmy through narrow passages – no thanks. We chose the geezer’s self-guided tour through the Big Room. It was still over a mile of walking and we were nearly alone in the cathedral-like silence. Pretty cool. Nice to travel off-season. We tried to take pictures, but… oh, well… we forgot our tripods.
After the caverns we headed out on a wilderness drive through Walnut Canyon (above). We had time to spare so we went to the Carlsbad art museum and cruised around town a little… but we were suffering from a little sensory overload.
