Day 11: Santa Fe Side Trip
18 Oct 2008 -- Today was another scenic drive, best described in photographs.
We drove north on US Rt 84 into “Georgia O’Keeffe” territory. The artist lived and painted in Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu. The rock formations were colorful and awesome. We drove about 90 miles up to Tierra Amarilla. It’s amazing to me that there are so many wilderness spaces left in America. I was anxious about going too far. We found a gas station in Tierra Amarilla, so that made me feel better. Still, we turned around and headed back to Santa Fe. (Ok, I admit it: I’m a city girl and a flatlander. Exploring at 7000 to 10,000 makes me nervous.
From my handwritten journal:
I am happy, inspired, frustrated, overwhelmed. We are deep into our travels and seeing many monumental sites, both natural and manmade. They wash over us, they excite us, they wear us out. We get footsore and touchy. We are serene and loving. I see so much that I want to be able to do and I'm so frustrated that my efforts all looks so belabored and crappy. Never mind. Keep doing it.
