DISPATCHED FROM THE CROSSROADS, AT THE intersection OF north & south

Beloved: Recommended Reading

I just finished listening to the audio version of Toni Morrison's "Beloved." It took about 14 hours of walking, but turned those walks into magic.

"Beloved" won a Nobel Prize and was recently #1 on the New York Times list of the Best Novels of the past 25 years. It's also one of those books you can sink into and find yourself transported to another world.

It's the story of what happens to slaves at the end of the Civil War and it's the story of a haunting. Through flashbacks you get a rich dose of what slavery was like. And, largely through the eyes of women, you learn where a mother's love will take her and why ghosts come back.

My little summary doesn't do the novel justice. The writing is nothing short of magical.
