Skinheads Joining the Army?
Here's a chilling piece of news: skinheads and neo-Nazis are being accepted into the U.S. military as recruiters get more anxious about making their quotas.
The Southern Poverty Law Center recently published their report.
Large numbers of potentially violent neo-Nazis, skinheads and other white supremacists are now learning the art of warfare in the armed forces.
Department of Defense investigators estimate thousands of soldiers in the Army alone are involved in extremist or gang activity. "We've got Aryan Nations graffiti in Baghdad," said one investigator. "That's a problem."...
Military extremists present an elevated threat both to their fellow soldiers and the general public. Today's white supremacists become tomorrow's domestic terrorists.
This just feels like one more nail in our collective coffin.
There is nothing that makes my blood run cold like American white supremicists. Maybe because they can speak English, their hate speech seems particularly vile and delusional.
Even more creepy is thinking of these young extremists lining up to join the Bush killing machine in Iraq — eager recruits, with a warped concept of "liberation." Oy.
What's even scarier is that the military good guys — the Joint Chiefs of Staff — are the ones keeping Bush's finger off the nuclear button in his quest to "liberate" Iran (Seymour Hersh, Last Stand, The New Yorker 7/10/06). The current generals are the sadder-but-wiser Vietnam Era soldiers who are waking up to the idea that they need to speak out against the kooky draft-dodger strategists running the Administration. What happens in 40 years when the generals are the wild-eyed "patriots" being recruited today?
A note of optimism: I did see the movie American History X. The story is a tragedy and yet it does show that young people can be redeemed. For those skinheads who are still impressionable, maybe some exposure to peoples of the world will wake them up.
